2.4 Equational Sentences
Compare the following sentences and their English translations:
a. Ma shlomcha (literally) What is your peace? (meaning) how are you?
b. Shlomi tov (literally) My peace is good. (meaning) I’m good.
c. Mar Williams hu yo-etz Mr Williams is the Counsellor hashagreerot hamaerikai-it of the American Embassy.
Now compare the following sentences and their translations:
d. meh-u-char It is late
e. na-im meh-od It is very pleasant
In these sentences the English has not only a verb form but this verb requires a subject, in this case the impersonal pronoun ‘it’. But, the Hebrew sentences are complete as they stand.

2.5 The Direct Object Preposition (et/ot)
The preposition ‘et’ precedes a direct object of a verb when the object is definite. An object is definite in any of the following case:
a. It is preceded by the definite article prefit ‘ha’ – ‘the’;
b. It has a pronoun suffix, e.g. ‘ish-tee’ – ‘my wife’;
c. It is a proper name, e.g. ‘Moshe’;
d. It is the first noun of a noun-noun construction in which the second noun is definite.
e.g. ‘yo-etz hashagreerot’ – ‘the counsellor of the embassy’.
e. It is in interrogative of demonstrative, e.g. ‘ma’ – ‘what’ or ‘zeh’ – ‘this’.
When the object of the very is not definite, then the preposition does not occur.
Compare:
Sgor et hadelet | Close the door |
Sgor delet | Close a door |
The sequence ‘et ha-‘is often contracted in ordinary speech to ‘ta’
e.g. ‘sgor tadelet’ and ‘pitchu tasfarim’
The singular set of pronominal suffixes is used with this preposition but the preposition has the alternate form ‘ot’ when occurring with a suffix.
‘Na-im li mey-od lehakir ot-cha‘
‘Na-im li mey-od lehakir ot-ach’
The second person plural forms are either ‘ot-chem’ andot-chen’.
