Grammar Drills
3.4 Alternate Forms of Nouns
In Grammar Section 1.6 it was noted that some nouns have an alternate form when occurring with suffixes. Some nouns also have an alternate form when occurring as the first noun in a noun-noun sequence. An example of this is:
Shalom ‘welfare’ shlom hamishpacha ‘the welfare of the family’
Compare, on the other hand:
yo-etez ‘Counsellor’ yo-etz hashagreerut ‘the Counsellor of the Embassy’
As with suffixed nouns, it is difficult to predict which nouns will have an alternate form or what the alternate form will be. Where such a form exists, it will be noted.
3.5 Dual Number in Nouns
In addition to singular and plural as grammatical numbers Hebrew has a noun suffix ‘eye-im’ (pronounced as in the English word eye or followed by im) which indicates dual number. Some examples are:
yom ‘day’ yo-meye-im ‘two days’
shavua ‘week’ shavu-eye-im ’two weeks’
chodesh ‘month’ chod-sheye-im ‘two months’
ayin ‘eye’ ai-neye-im ‘(two) eyes’
This suffix occurs with a limited number of nouns and in a few other forms. These nouns include parts of the body which come in pairs, doubled numbers and units of time, paired articles of clothes and a few other items. It is not otherwise used to indicate two of something. Except for this suffix, dual nouns are treated as plurals. Verbs and adjectives used with them have plural forms and the plural set of pronominal suffixes is also used. (See Section 3.6)
3.6 Pronominal Suffixes – Plural Set
In Section 1.6 the singular set of pronominal suffixes was discussed. Another set of pronominal suffixes occurs with plural (and dual) nouns and with certain prepositions.
