4.4 The Preposition ‘shel -’ ‘of’
Examine these sentences which have occurred in the text:

| Ha-beye-it she-loh ya-feh meh-od. | His house is very nice. |
Note that the preposition ‘shel’ indicates a genitive or possessive relationship of the noun following it or pronoun affixed to it with the noun preceding it.
This is the most frequent construction in spoken Hebrew indicating such a possessive relationship. The preposition may often be equated to the English of as in the first example above.
The noun preceding ‘shel’ is made definite with ‘ha’ or with a pronominal suffix ‘ish-to’. The latter is not used when a pronoun is suffixed to ‘shel’ itself.

The construction with the suffixed preposition is synonymous with the suffixed noun construction.

When the noun precedent ‘shel’ is indefinite the usual English equivalent is a prepositional phrase construction.

4.5 Contraction of ‘le-‘ and ‘ha-‘ ‘to the’.
Examine the underlined forms in the following:
leBen Gurion ‘to Ben Gurion’
Hashagreerot ‘the Embassy’
Lashagreerot ‘to the Embassy’
Note that the preposition ‘le-’ and the definite article ‘ha-‘ contract to ‘la’.
When ‘ha-‘ is a verb prefix or is simply the first syllable of a word (but the definite article) then the contraction is not made: ‘le-ha-keer’ – ‘to know’להכיר
The preposition has the alternate form ‘la’ with certain infinitives – larutz, לרוץ ; lagur לגור. However it is not a contraction of ‘le-ha’ in these cases.
