7.4 Gender and Number – Present Tense Verbs and Adjectives
Examine the underlined forms in the following sentences:
At-ah me-da-ber ivrit ma-mash kmoh Israel-ee. |
אתה מדבר עברית ממש כמו ישראלי |
At me-da-ber-et ivrit ma-mash kmoh Israel-it. |
את מדברת עברית ממש כמו ישראלת |

An-ee ga-ra bain-tie-im be-mallon Dan. |
אני גרה בינתיים במלון דן |
Aich an-ee ya-chol le-ha-gee-a la-doh-ar ha-mer-ka-zee. |
איך אני יכול להגיע לדואר המרכזי |
Aich an-ee ya-chol-a le-ha-gee-a la-doh-ar ha-mer-ka-zee. |
איך אני יכולה להגיע לדואר המרכזי |
You will note here that, in contrast to the past tense verb forms, there is no pronoun suffix to the verb itself. Instead the independent form of the pronoun is used. The verb form indicates the gender of the subject with the first person. The pattern is similar to the noun-adjective sentence pattern:
An-ee cha-dash ba-ar-etz |
אני חדש בארץ |
An-ee cha-da-sha ba-ar-erz |
אני חדשה בארץ |
The similarity extends to the plurals:
An-oo gar-im be-cheye-fa. |
אנחנו גרים בחיפה |
An-oo gar-ot be-cheye-fa. |
אנחנו גרות בחיפה |
The present tense of verbs has just these four forms – masculine singular, feminine singular, masculine plural and feminine plural and the person is indicated by an independent subject.
Plurals of present tense verb forms and of adjectives are all alike in that the masculine plural has the suffix ‘im’ and the feminine has the suffix ‘ot’
Note – There are some masculine plural nouns that end in ‘ot’ and some feminine plural nouns that end in ‘im’. There present tense verbs and adjectives for these plurals however end in ‘im’ and ‘ot’ respectively.
The feminine singular forms are part of two major types – those that have a suffix ending in ‘-t’ and those that have the suffix ‘a’. The forms which have thus far occurred are:
‘–t’ feminines |
‘–a’ feminines |
me-da-ber-et |

om-er-et |
meh-veen-a |
cho-shev-et |

The variations of these two major types will be described and drilled in turn.
7.5 ‘–t’ Suffix Feminine Forms
(a) Present tense of verbs with Stem Pattern ‘er’
Examine the verb forms in the following sentences:
At-ah me-da-ber ivrit.
At-me-da-ber-et ivrit.
In this patern the masculine singular ends in ‘er’. The feminine is the same as the masculine but with added unstressed ‘et’. in the plurals the final stem vowel ‘e’ is dropped, unless a three consonant cluster would result or two similar consonants would be juxtaposed.
At-em me-da-brim ivrit.
At-en me-da-brot ivrit.
At-em mit-konnen-im la-goor be-rammat gan.
at-en mit-konnen-ot la-goor be-rammat gan.
The adjective ‘ach-er ’ is also of this pattern. The forms are:
ach-er ach-er-et ach-er-im ach-er-ot
There are some other minor variations of this pattern in the plurals and there will be described as they occur in the text.
The following drills are substitution-agreement drills. The last substitution cue given in each drill will result in the model sentence. Each drill should be done a number of times in continuous succession until correct ensure sentences are given without hesitation.
Substitutions for the first person may be masculine or feminine, depending on your gender.

(b) Present Tense of Verbs with Stem pattern ‘eh-a/a-at’

yod-eh-a (m.s.) |
יודע |
yo-da-at (f.s.) |
יודעת |
yod-im (m.p.) |
יודעים |
yod-ot (f.p. |
יודעות |
Verbs in which the masculine singular ends in ‘eh-ach’ have a similar pattern. The four forms have the following endings:
-eh-ach(m.s.) |
-ach-at (f.s.) |
-chim (m.p.) |
-chot(f.p.) |
F.Substitution-Agreement Drill

(c) Present Tense Pattern ‘mo-tzeh ‘mot-tzet’
This pattern is characterized by the singular ending in ‘eh’ or ‘et’ and by the plural ‘im’ and ‘ot’.
The full present of mo-tzeh is:
motz-eh(m.s.) |
motz-et (f.s.) |
motz-im (m.p.) |
motz-ot (f.p.) |
In the plurals this pattern is similar to that of ‘yod-im’ in Section (b).you should be sure to practice the singulars of any such plural in order to not confuse the two types. There are pairs of verbs whose only distinction is in this respect.

(d) Present Tense Pattern ‘nim-tza nim-tzet’
This pattern is a minor variation of a pattern which will be discussed later. The plural suffixes are added to the masculine singular and the feminine singular has the suffix ‘-t’ with the vowel change. You should simply learn this particular verb at this time. The full present is:
nim-tzah(m.s.) |
nim-tzet (f.s.) |
nim-tza-im(m.p.) |
nim-tza-ot(f.p.) |
J.Substitution-Agreement Drill

(e) Derived Adjectives with ‘ee’
Adjectives are often derived from other parts of speech by the addition of ‘ee’, in certain casers with other changes in the form. Examples from our text so far are:
‘mem-shal-tee’ derived from ‘mem-shal-a’ – ‘government’
‘amerikai-ee’ derived from ‘amerika’ – ‘America’
mer-ka-zee’ derived from ‘mer-kaz’ – ‘center’
The ending or these adjectives are of the following pattern:
ee (m.s.) |
it (f.s.) |
eye-im (m.p.) |
ee-ot (f.p.) |
In some adjectives the stress is on a non final syllable as in ‘amerik-ai-im’ and ‘amerik-ai-it’.
The above pattern in derived adjectives. There are also derived nouns, which have similar patterns.
For example
yis-rayl-ee (m.s.) |
yis-rayl-it (f.s.) |
yis-rayl -im (m.p.) |
yis-rayl-ee-ot (f.p.) |
